Smile ID’s 2025 Digital Identity Fraud in Africa Report reveals a surge in biometric fraud cases in West Africa, with a 22% rejection rate in 2024, up from 12% in 2023. Spoofing incidents, where attackers mimic genuine users, skyrocketed to 15% in West Africa, compared to under 5% the previous year.

    Fraud Trends:

Regional Variations: East Africa had the highest rejection rate at 27%, followed by West and Central Africa at 22%.

Time of Day: Fraudulent activity peaked between 8 PM and 4 AM WAT, with the highest incidence at midnight.

Industry Focus: The financial sector, particularly digital banks (35%) and microfinance institutions (30%), experienced the most fraud attempts.

Increasing Sophistication: Biometric fraud attempts increased to an average of 16% per quarter, the highest in three years.

Account Takeover Risk: Authentication attempts showed four times higher fraud rates than registration, highlighting a significant rise in account takeover risks.

Addressing the Challenge, Mark Straub, CEO of Smile ID, emphasized the need for adaptability in fraud prevention. He stated, “While AI empowers fraudsters, it also equips security professionals to combat zero-day attacks and automate manual processes.”

The report highlights the vulnerability of fintech platforms with weak Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols, which bad actors exploit to create fraudulent accounts for illicit activities.

    Recommendations:

Smile ID calls for a collaborative approach between industries, governments, and technology providers to:

Develop standardized frameworks: To strengthen trust and combat identity fraud across Africa.

Implement robust KYC protocols: To mitigate risks associated with identity farming and account takeovers.

Leverage advanced technology: Such as Enhanced SmartSelfie™, to counter sophisticated attacks like deepfakes and replay videos.
