“When we protect young people in the digital space, we aren’t just shielding them from harm; we are actively unlocking the door to economic innovation, entrepreneurship, and national security.”

This was the core message at the recent Youth Safety Summit in Abuja, hosted by Meta in collaboration with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development.

The event underscored a powerful truth: a safe internet is the most fertile ground for youth potential.

Online safety and digital literacy are two sides of the same coin when looking at the core benefits of youth online safety. When young people feel secure online, their relationship with technology changes from passive consumption to active creation. Equipping the youth with the skills to navigate the digital world safely is fundamental to driving entrepreneurship, job creation, and sustainable economic growth. A digitally secure generation is a generation ready to confidently build the startups of tomorrow.

Safety initiatives like the newly launched Youth Online Safety Campaign and My Digital World 2.0 do not just teach kids what to avoid, but instead, they build critical competencies to establish digital resilience for the future economy. By treating online safety, privacy, digital wellbeing, and AI literacy as essential skills, Nigeria is raising a generation that is digitally skilled to compete globally, digitally responsible to foster healthier online communities, and digitally resilient to adapt to fast-evolving cyberspaces.

Protecting young people also plays a major role in strengthening national security and trust, because a secure digital ecosystem naturally fosters trust. By protecting its youngest citizens, Nigeria strengthens its overall cybersecurity framework. This alignment supports the federal government’s priority of reforming the economy for sustained growth while building a robust digital trust environment that attracts international partnerships and investment.

As Kashifu Inuwa, the Director General of NITDA, stated, equipping citizens with digital skills without teaching them how to navigate the digital world safely, responsibly, and ethically would leave their work incomplete.

The ongoing partnership between NITDA and Meta proves that proactive safety measures yield massive community benefits.

The partnership’s youth safety campaign achieved a massive reach of over 94 million people, which successfully drove widespread awareness of privacy and digital well-being across Facebook and Instagram.

Looking ahead, the initiative supports Nigeria’s digital literacy target to reach 70% of citizens by 2027 by integrating core safety modules into mainstream education nationwide. Ultimately, the long-term goal aims for a 95% digital literacy rate by 2030, ensuring almost every Nigerian can participate confidently and safely in the digital economy.

The benefits of a safer internet cannot be achieved by tech platforms alone. True protection creates a protective ecosystem around the child, blending secure digital spaces with parents who understand digital privacy, teachers backed by NITDA’s capacity-building initiatives to mainstream safety education and grassroots advocates, including the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), driving responsible online behavior at the local level.
