The Lagos State government has taken a significant step towards fostering agricultural innovation and food security by awarding N100 million in grants to 26 young Agripreneurs. The grants were presented at the inaugural Agrinnovation event, a platform designed to stimulate collaboration, innovation, and sustainable practices within the agricultural sector.

Organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, in partnership with the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) and the Eko Innovation Centre, Agrinnovation aims to empower the next generation of agricultural leaders. The event, themed “Shaping Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems for the Next Generation,” underscores the government’s commitment to transforming the state’s agricultural landscape.

    Government’s Commitment to Agricultural Development

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, emphasized the state’s dedication to achieving food security and production excellence. He highlighted the importance of embracing technology, fostering collaboration, and implementing sustainable practices to drive agricultural development.

The Governor commended the establishment of the Lagos Agrinnovation Club, a community of young Agripreneurs dedicated to reimagining agriculture. He also acknowledged the 316 innovative business case entries submitted by aspiring entrepreneurs, highlighting the potential for transformative change within the sector.

Empowering Agripreneurs for a Sustainable Future

The 26 Agripreneurs selected as finalists will receive mentorship, networking opportunities, and a share of the N100 million Agrinnovation Fund. This support will enable them to scale their businesses, develop innovative solutions, and contribute to the state’s food security goals.

A Bright Future for Lagos Agriculture

Honourable Commissioner of Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, expressed gratitude to the jurors who played a crucial role in selecting the finalists from a pool of 316 entries. She emphasized the potential of agriculture as a pathway to prosperity and encouraged young entrepreneurs to seize the opportunities within the sector.

Dr. Oluwarotimi Fashola, Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, urged the Agripreneurs to leverage the knowledge, connections, and inspiration gained from the event to drive practical and sustainable solutions.

    Agripreneurs Express Gratitude

Jumamai Abalaka, founder and COO of PricePally, and Dada Oyindamola, co-founder of Homal Foods, expressed their appreciation for the grant, stating that it will significantly contribute to the growth and expansion of their businesses. Ifeoma Ara, a representative of Happy Coffee, also highlighted the impact of the grant on their coffee processing operations.

As Lagos State continues to invest in agricultural innovation, the future of the state’s food system appears promising. By empowering young Agripreneurs and fostering a culture of innovation, the government aims to position Lagos as a leading agricultural hub in Nigeria and Africa.
