The West Africa Telecommunications Regulators Assembly’s (WATRA) Executive Secretary, Aliyu Aboki, will be at the helm of a critical session at the upcoming International Telecommunications Union’s Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR-24).

Scheduled for tomorrow in Kampala, Uganda, Session 5: “Safe and Inclusive Digital Financial Services” promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of the regulatory frameworks needed for a secure and accessible digital financial ecosystem.

Mr. Aboki’s experience and knowledge of the regulatory landscape will be instrumental in guiding a panel of distinguished experts. Together, they’ll delve into the complexities of crypto-asset regulation, navigating the balance between innovative fintech and traditional banking practices, all while prioritizing consumer protection in the digital finance realm.

The session will tackle crucial questions: How can everyone be included in the digital financial world? Are calls to regulate cryptocurrencies the right approach, and who will be impacted? What steps are necessary to safeguard digital transactions and maintain consumer trust?

Joining Mr. Aboki will be a diverse panel of experts offering their unique perspectives:

Mr. Mustafa Yasin Sheikh, Director General, National Communications Authority, Somalia
Mr. Jabiri Kuwe Bakari, Director General, Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA)
Mr. James Claude, CEO, Global Voice Group
Ms. Bernadette Lewis, Secretary General, Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO)
Ms. Mei Lin Fung, Chair, People-Centered Internet

GSR 2024 prioritizes open and frank dialogue, encouraging spontaneous and insightful exchanges rather than scripted presentations.

“As digital financial services become the cornerstone of global commerce, addressing the twin challenges of security and inclusivity is paramount,” says Aliyu Aboki. “This GSR session goes beyond discussing regulatory hurdles; it’s about shaping a future for digital finance that’s secure, accessible, and trustworthy for everyone. I’m excited to moderate what promises to be a transformative discussion, paving the way for groundbreaking advancements in our industry.”
