In response to the growing challenge of unemployment in Nigeria, especially among the youths, Alliance for Youth, a business-driven movement decided to come together to address the gap by developing innovative solutions that create sustainable earning opportunities for young people across the country.

A report by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics has shown that Nigeria’s youth unemployment rate among individuals aged 15-24 rose to 8.6% in Q3 2023, reflecting an increase of 1.4% from Q2 2023.

Thus, the Alliance launched in August 2021, comprising organizations such as Nestlé Nigeria, Jobberman Nigeria, Big Bottling Company, the United Nations Global Compact Network Nigeria, and U-Connect HR Limited.

    Key Initiatives:

    • Vocational Skills Training: The Alliance offers comprehensive training in solar panel installation, graphic design, CCTV and cable installation, and beauty care.
    • Partnerships: Collaborations with organizations like Nestlé Nigeria, Jobberman Nigeria, and the United Nations Global Compact Network Nigeria have strengthened the Alliance’s impact.
    • Mentorship and Support: Graduates receive mentorship and support to help them launch and grow their businesses.

    Success Stories:

    • Mustapha Fasasi: A participant from Oyo State successfully transitioned into a career in solar energy after completing the training.
    • 2023 Cohort: 372 young people graduated from the training program, receiving start-up kits and capital to kickstart their ventures.

    Impact and Future Goals:

    • Community Development: The Alliance has trained over 35,000 young people since its inception, contributing to the development of their communities.
    • Sustainable Future: The organization aims to empower 250,000 young people with the skills they need to create a sustainable future.

Speaking on the impact of the Alliance, Tumi Onamade, Chief Operating Officer of the United Nations Global Compact Network Nigeria said: “The Alliance for Youth is fostering a new generation of change-makers who are equipped to shape a more inclusive and sustainable future.”

Also, Shakiru Lawal, Country Human Resources Manager at Nestlé Nigeria added: “Investing in our youth is an investment in Nigeria’s future prosperity. The Alliance for Youth is a vital platform for empowering young people.”

The training covers four key skill areas: solar panel installation, graphic design (including social media and web design), CCTV and cable installation, and beauty care, including makeup, aromatherapy, and massage.
