Six major updates that change Gemini from simple assistance to proactive, agentic help

In just one year, the Gemini app has seen explosive growth, scaling from 400 million users to over 900 million people across 230 countries and more than 70 languages. People around the world are increasingly turning to Gemini to streamline their daily tasks, spark creativity, and boost productivity.

Today at Google I/O 2026, Google announced the next major evolution for the platform. The focus is shifting from simple assistance to proactive, agentic help. Gemini is no longer just an AI you talk to; it is becoming a 24/7 personal agent capable of working in the background to get things done on your behalf.

Here are the six biggest announcements coming to the Gemini app:

    1. Gemini 3.5 Flash Powering the Future
To make these new proactive capabilities possible, Google is introducing Gemini 3.5 Flash to the app. This is the first in Google’s next generation of models, explicitly designed to combine frontier intelligence with lightning-fast action. It is the engine that allows Gemini to move beyond generating text to actively completing complex tasks.
    2. A Reimagined Interface with ‘Neural Expressive’
Google has redesigned the entire Gemini experience from the ground up with a new design language called “Neural Expressive.” The interface now features fluid animations, vibrant colors, and haptic feedback. It deeply integrates the Gemini Live conversational experience, allowing you to seamlessly switch between typing a quick question and diving into a free-flowing voice conversation. Responses will also become much more engaging, moving away from simple text walls to real-time, carefully crafted visual responses including timelines and narrated videos.
    3. Cinematic Video Creation with Gemini Omni
To help users be more creative, Google is launching Gemini Omni. This new model brings ideas to reality by allowing users to seamlessly combine text, image, and video inputs to generate high-quality video outputs. It offers a fluid way to edit videos—like applying cinematic zooms or changing backgrounds—using simple prompts. Users can even create a custom AI avatar that looks and sounds exactly like them, removing the need for expensive equipment or technical jargon.
    4. A ‘Daily Brief’ to Start Your Morning
To give users a head start on their day, Gemini is introducing the “Daily Brief.” This feature acts as an out-of-the-box agent that securely connects to your apps to work in the background. Every morning, it gathers urgent notes from your Gmail inbox and upcoming meetings from your Calendar, synthesizing them into a quick briefing. It goes beyond simple summarization by organizing and prioritizing your day based on your goals and suggesting immediate next steps.
    5. A 24/7 Personal Agent Called Gemini Spark
Representing the biggest shift for the platform, Google announced Gemini Spark: a 24/7 personal AI agent. Running on Gemini 3.5 and seamlessly integrated with Google’s suite of tools like Gmail, Docs, and Slides, Spark can take complex, multi-step tasks off your plate. Because it is cloud-based, it keeps working even when you close your laptop. You can ask it to automatically parse monthly credit card statements, monitor your inbox for specific school emails, or synthesize raw meeting notes into a polished Google Doc.
    6. Taking Control of Your Desktop with the macOS App
Google is bringing the power of these new agents directly to your desktop. The Gemini app for macOS is receiving major updates, integrating Gemini Spark to help with local tasks like organizing files or extracting PDF data directly into Google Sheets. Furthermore, the desktop app will feature advanced voice understanding technology. Using the context from your screen, it can turn free-flowing speech into precise drafts, intelligently ignoring “ums” and stutter-steps to capture your exact intent right where your cursor is.
