Advocacy groups demand removal of X and Grok from app stores over digital undressing crisis

A powerful coalition of women’s rights organizations, tech watchdogs, and progressive activists has formally petitioned Apple and Google to de-platform the social media site X and its AI chatbot, Grok.

In open letters published Wednesday, the coalition—which includes UltraViolet, the National Organization for Women (NOW), MoveOn, and ParentsTogether Action—accused the Elon Musk-owned platforms of facilitating the mass creation of illegal, sexually explicit content that violates the terms of service for both the App Store and Google Play.

The demand follows a viral “bikini trend” and a wave of “digital undressing” cases at the start of 2026. Critics allege that Grok’s image-generation tools allow users to manipulate photos of women and minors, digitally removing clothing or placing them in sexualized positions without consent.

“They are enabling a system in which thousands, if not tens of thousands, of people… are being sexually abused through the help of their own app stores,” said Jenna Sherman, UltraViolet’s campaign director.

Recent investigations into the chatbot’s output have raised alarms:

    • One review found Grok generating roughly one non-consensual sexualized image per minute.
    • Despite X’s claims of adjustments, tests conducted as recently as Tuesday showed the bot still generating bikini-clad versions of uploaded photos upon request.
    • The American Federation of Teachers recently announced it would quit X entirely, citing concerns over indecent AI-generated images of children.

While Apple and Google have yet to respond publicly, several nations have already taken decisive action. Malaysia and Indonesia have implemented temporary bans on Grok, citing its ability to produce grossly offensive and obscene content. Meanwhile, regulators in the United Kingdom, India, and the European Union have launched formal investigations into potential violations of online safety laws.

In response to the mounting pressure, xAI (the developer behind Grok) reportedly auto-responded to media inquiries with the phrase “Legacy Media Lies.” However, the company later announced it would geoblock certain features in regions where they violate local laws and has restricted image generation to paid subscribers to increase “accountability.”

Advocates argue that moving the features behind a paywall—effectively monetizing the abuse—is not a solution. The coalition is now looking to Big Tech’s gatekeepers to enforce their own safety standards.

“Apple and Google both claim to take child protection seriously,” Sherman noted. “Their treatment of X will reveal what their values actually are in practice.”
