The African Union Commission (AUC) and the Federal Republic of Nigeria have solidified a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the implementation of the Digital Transformation Strategy for Africa.

The high-level bilateral engagement, which took place at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, was hosted by AU Commissioner, Her Excellency Lerato D. Mataboge, and attended by Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani.

In a post on his official LinkedIn page, Minister Tijani subsequently announced the details of the landmark diplomatic engagement.

According to him, the discussions between the continental body and Africa’s largest tech ecosystem focused on aligning critical policy frameworks to propel the continent’s digital economy forward with the dialogue centered on three priority areas.

They are scaling up financial and technical investments in robust digital public infrastructure across member states, harmonizing data governance frameworks to create a secure, synchronized legal environment for digital operations and fostering regional innovation ecosystems that allow African tech startups and entrepreneurs to scale across national borders seamlessly.

Both leaders emphasized that deep, continent-wide digital connectivity is no longer a luxury, but an indispensable foundation for the success of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). A unified digital framework is viewed as a vital catalyst for driving cross-border trade, accelerating financial inclusion, and promoting tech-driven entrepreneurship across regional markets.

The collaboration seeks to fuse Nigeria’s local technology momentum with the AU’s continental policy leadership, with the ultimate goal to equip Africa’s rapidly expanding, tech-ready youth population with the resources necessary to lead the global digital shift.

With various digital frameworks already mapped out, both Commissioner Mataboge and Minister Tijani stressed that the immediate priority must be transitioning from policy design to rapid execution.

To unlock the continent’s immense digital wealth, the partners agreed on the urgent need to reshape regional regulatory environments. Moving forward, the focus will be on enacting regulations that actively support commercial scalability and technical capacity building for African innovators.
