The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has commended Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for their compliance with the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries.

In a statement signed by Mrs Hadiza Umar, Director, Corporate Communications & Media Relations Department at NITDA, these platforms recently submitted their 2024 compliance reports, which highlight significant efforts to promote online safety and manage harmful content in Nigeria.

The Code of Practice, a joint initiative by NITDA, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), outlines clear guidelines for a safer digital environment. The compliance reports reveal detailed statistics on how these platforms have addressed user safety concerns.

According to the reports, key statistics across the platforms include 754,629 registered complaints, 58,909,112 content takedowns, 420,439 pieces of content removed and re-uploaded following user appeals and 13,597,057 closed and deactivated accounts.

These figures represent a significant step toward creating a safer and more responsible online space for Nigerian users and demonstrate the platforms’ commitment to a secure digital environment.

NITDA noted that this achievement aligns with the Code of Practice, which requires large service platforms to register in Nigeria, comply with local laws, and fulfill their tax obligations. The agency also emphasized the need for ongoing collaboration among all stakeholders, including industry players, civil society, and regulatory partners, to further enhance user safety, improve digital literacy, and build trust within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
