Crypto: Adoption rates decline in U.S., India, and Brazil amidst regulatory uncertainty

After nearly a decade of soaring cryptocurrency adoption worldwide, the digital asset market is experiencing a significant cool-off in 2025, with several major markets witnessing a decline in usage. New data presented by CryptoPresales.com reveals that crypto adoption has dropped in three of the five largest crypto markets: the United States, India, and Brazil.

Last year, over 850 million people globally were utilizing cryptocurrencies for investment and payments, an eightfold increase in just four years. However, 2025 projections paint a less optimistic picture, indicating stagnation and even decreases in crypto adoption in these key economies.

According to the Statista Consumer Insights survey, growing regulatory uncertainty, market fatigue, and increased investor caution are cited as the primary drivers behind this trend. In India and Brazil, stricter government regulations and fewer perceived benefits for crypto usage have significantly slowed momentum. Meanwhile, in the U.S., evolving policies and a burgeoning interest in more traditional, regulated investment vehicles like Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) have contributed to the market’s cooling. This shift has led many users to adopt a “wait-and-see” approach, resulting in a noticeable slowdown in everyday crypto activity.

The United States has seen a 3% decline in crypto adoption over two years, with the percentage of Americans using cryptocurrencies for investments and payments dropping from 16% in 2023 to 13% in 2025. Former crypto hotspots, India and Brazil, have experienced even more significant drops. Despite a historically negative governmental stance, India had seen a substantial rise in crypto investors. However, after reporting approximately 27% of surveyed Indians using cryptocurrencies in 2023, the latest data shows a sharp decline to a 20% adoption rate, a 7% drop in just two years. Brazil followed a similar trajectory, with its adoption rate falling by 5% to 23% between 2023 and 2025. France also saw a slight decline of 1% in the same period.

    Growth Continues in Other Markets

Despite these declines in major markets, the narrative is not uniform across the globe. The CryptoPresales.com data indicates that other countries included in the Statista survey have experienced growth in crypto adoption over the past two years. Notably, the United Kingdom, once seen as less central to crypto adoption, now boasts around 16% crypto users, a significant 4% increase in two years. Germany has also seen a 2% increase, reaching 14% of crypto users this year. Even in China, known for its crypto-restrictive policies, the adoption rate grew by 1%, reaching 11% in 2025. This highlights that while some of the largest markets are pulling back, interest and engagement in digital assets continue to expand in other significant global economies.
