FCCPC greenlights five firms for airtime and data lending services

In a move to formalize the burgeoning ‘borrow now, pay later’ digital ecosystem, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has officially granted regulatory approval to five companies to provide airtime and data lending services across Nigeria.

The consumer protection watchdog announced that the licenses aim to ensure fair competition and protect Nigerians from predatory lending practices within the telecommunications sector.

The commission identified the following entities as meeting the necessary regulatory requirements to operate: Coverage Broadband Limited, Total TIM Nigeria Limited, Rane Interactive Medien CLS Limited, Mode NG Applications Nigeria Limited and Cloud Interactive Associate Limited.

For millions of Nigerians, airtime and data lending have become essential tools for staying connected when immediate cash is unavailable. By bringing these five providers into the official regulatory fold, the FCCPC is signaling a shift toward a more transparent and structured market.

“The goal is to ensure that while consumers have access to these essential credit facilities, they are not subjected to exploitative interest rates or privacy violations,” a source close to the Commission noted.

Before these approvals, direct mobile network operator services largely dominated the airtime lending space. The entry of these third-party firms is expected to increase competition because more players typically lead to better service terms and lower convenience fees for borrowers. Approved firms must adhere to strict FCCPC guidelines regarding how they handle consumer data and debt recovery to ensure data protection. Additionally, these companies are expected to partner closely with major telcos like MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile to deliver instant credit via USSD and mobile apps for seamless integration.

The FCCPC has remained vigilant in recent years, particularly concerning the activities of digital loan sharks. By proactively licensing airtime and data lenders, the Commission is setting a precedent for digital credit services in Nigeria, balancing the need for innovation with the absolute necessity of consumer safety.

As of today, these five companies are authorized to commence or continue their specialized lending operations, provided they maintain the standards set by the Commission.
