GigaLayer acquires Registeram, cementing dominance in Africa’s domain and hosting market

GigaLayer, a leading force in Africa’s cloud infrastructure sector, has announced the acquisition of Registeram, a pioneer Nigerian domain registration and hosting firm. The move marks a major consolidation in the regional tech ecosystem as GigaLayer accelerates its aggressive strategy to dominate digital infrastructure across the continent.

The acquisition of Registeram, which has been operational since 2008, is the latest in a high-velocity string of buyouts by GigaLayer. The company has successfully integrated several key brands—including Trudigits, Hub8, MainOne’s SMEinaBox, and LagosHost—positioning itself as the primary consolidator in a historically fragmented hosting industry.

Ahmad Mukoshy, Founder and CEO of GigaLayer, emphasized that the deal transcends simple market share. “This acquisition reinforces our commitment to building resilient, locally operated cloud and domain infrastructure for African businesses,” Mukoshy stated. “We are not just acquiring customers; we are strengthening Africa’s digital backbone.”

GigaLayer has assured Registeram’s existing clientele of a seamless migration with no service disruptions. The integration process will provide customers with several immediate upgrades:

    • Infrastructure Overhaul: Services will be migrated to GigaLayer’s enterprise-grade platform to enhance performance and redundancy.
    • Enhanced Security: Users will gain access to GigaLayer’s robust support system and advanced security protocols.
    • Product Scalability: Clients will now have direct access to broader cloud compute and high-availability hosting solutions previously unavailable to them.

As Nigerian businesses face mounting pressure to comply with local data residency regulations, GigaLayer is doubling down on local cloud sovereignty. The company currently operates infrastructure across two Tier-III data centers in Lagos, focusing on bare-metal and cloud compute capabilities tailored for enterprise workloads.

By reducing reliance on offshore providers, GigaLayer aims to offer high-performance solutions that are both compliance-ready and shielded from the volatility of foreign exchange. “We believe Africa’s digital future must be built on African infrastructure,” Mukoshy added.

Following the deal, the founders of Registeram are expected to exit to pursue new ventures, while GigaLayer assumes full operational control of all assets and client portfolios.

This acquisition signals a maturing market. Local players are no longer just filling gaps; they are scaling up to compete with global giants by offering localized technical support, Naira-based pricing stability, and the ultra-low latency that only local infrastructure can provide.
