In a strategic move to curb reoffending and redirect technical talent toward nation-building, GoLegit Africa, a non-profit initiative, is seeking a partnership with the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to launch rehabilitation engagements for inmates convicted of cyber-related offenses within the FCT Command.

During a courtesy visit by the Golegit team, comprising of Suleiman Farouk, Director of Programme Delivery and Precious Umunnakwe, Inmates Rehabilitation Project Manager to Christopher Jen, FCT Controller of Correctional Services in Abuja, the organisation noted that the initiative aims to transform the lives of tech-savvy offenders by redirecting their focus from cybercrime to legitimate digital careers through mentorship and ethical reorientation.

GoLegit Africa emphasized that while enforcement is necessary, the long-term solution to Nigeria’s cybercrime challenge lies in structured rehabilitation.

Commenting on the visit, Remi Afon, Executive Director of GoLegit Cyber Initiative, highlighted that many offenders possess significant technical aptitude that could be harnessed for the country’s benefit if properly redirected.

“Sustainable reduction of cybercrime requires not only enforcement, but also structured rehabilitation, re-education, and reintegration pathways for offenders, particularly youths with demonstrable technical aptitude,” Afon stated.

While welcoming the initiative, Controller Christopher Jen urged the organization to expand its focus. He encouraged GoLegit Africa to look beyond traditional cybercrime and address other technological avenues that criminals exploit to commit offenses in the country.

“We are happy to welcome this idea, which we believe is novel. It will go a long way to redefine many inmates and help them think beyond criminality once they are released,” Jen remarked.

The proposed engagement at the FCT correctional centers aims to achieve several key milestones, including assessing the specific backgrounds and motivations of inmates to better understand their skill sets. The initiative will also facilitate discussions on the consequences of cybercrime and the importance of digital ethics to ensure an ethical re-orientation.

Additionally, the programme seeks to create new pathways by identifying suitable candidates for post-custodial mentorship and professional digital skills training.

“We believe that this initiative can contribute positively to reducing recidivism and supporting national cybercrime prevention efforts,” Afon added.
By focusing on “re-orientation over punishment,” GoLegit Africa hopes to turn former cyber-offenders into ethical tech professionals, ultimately strengthening Nigeria’s digital economy
