Google has partnered with British-Sierra Leonean actor Idris Elba to launch a $1 million initiative that will provide Nigerian creators and others across Africa with free access to artificial intelligence tools aimed at improving content production and boosting their competitiveness in the global digital economy.

The initiative, funded by Google and the Elba Hope Foundation, targets 100,000 creators in Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, Kenya and Sierra Leone. Participants will receive free access to Google’s Gemini AI assistant and other digital tools that support writing, research, image generation, translation and video production.

Google said the programme is intended to remove the financial barriers that have limited many creators’ access to advanced AI technologies despite the rapid growth of Africa’s creative industry.

For Nigerian creators, the initiative could help reduce the cost and time required to produce professional-quality content while expanding opportunities in sectors such as film, music, digital media, podcasting, social media and online education.

Google’s Senior Vice President for Research and Technology, James Manyika, said the programme demonstrates the company’s commitment to expanding access to AI technologies across emerging markets.

Nigeria, home to one of Africa’s largest creator economies, was selected alongside South Africa, Ghana, Kenya and Sierra Leone for the programme. Google said the countries were chosen because of their vibrant creator communities and growing roles in the continent’s digital economy.

The initiative comes as Nigeria’s creative industry continues to gain international recognition through Nollywood productions, Afrobeats music and a growing number of digital creators building audiences on online platforms.

Google said the partnership also reflects its broader efforts to increase AI adoption across Africa while equipping creators with tools to produce higher-quality content and reach wider audiences without the cost of premium AI subscriptions.
