Nigeria eyes cryptocurrency tax windfall to bolster government coffers

The Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is developing new regulations aimed at bringing cryptocurrency trading and digital asset transactions into the formal tax system.

This initiative is a key component of President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s broader fiscal reforms, aimed at aggressively pursuing revenue generation, with its sights set on the burgeoning cryptocurrency market.

In an email response to Bloomberg, the SEC confirmed that it’s working on rules to “ensure that all eligible transactions on regulated exchanges are brought into the formal tax net.” While the agency recognizes the significant tax potential of cryptocurrency and the potential for substantial revenue gains for the country, it has not yet released any revenue projections.

A crucial piece of this strategy is a pending bill, currently under legislative review, that outlines a framework for cryptocurrency taxation and other levies. The SEC expects this bill to be passed this quarter. To further facilitate taxation and oversight, the SEC plans to expand cryptocurrency licensing to include formal centralized exchanges. The agency believes these centralized platforms will offer greater investor protection and encourage wider adoption, ultimately benefiting the tax collection efforts.

The government sees the rapidly expanding cryptocurrency sector as a prime opportunity to boost revenue while simultaneously increasing oversight of digital assets. Since taking office in 2023, the Tinubu administration has implemented several fiscal reforms with the dual goals of increasing government revenue and reducing the deficit.

This move builds upon previous efforts. Former President Muhammadu Buhari’s Finance Act 2023, signed into law before the end of his term, introduced its own tax reforms, including a 10% tax on gains from the disposal of digital assets. This earlier legislation signaled Nigeria’s recognition of the economic potential of cryptocurrencies and its commitment to ensuring they contribute to national development.

The new SEC regulations and the pending legislation represent a significant step further in formalizing the taxation of digital assets, broadening Nigeria’s tax base, fostering innovation, and addressing the regulatory challenges presented by this dynamic sector. This proactive approach underscores Nigeria’s understanding of the growing influence and economic potential of digital assets and its determination to adapt its tax system to the evolving financial landscape.
