Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment of Nigeria, has articulated a compelling vision for Africa’s digital trade future, with Nigeria at the forefront. Addressing the transformative potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), particularly its groundbreaking Protocol on Digital Trade, Dr. Oduwole emphasized the continent’s readiness to embrace a digitally driven economy.

Africa’s digital trade landscape is experiencing rapid growth, with projections showing the internet economy contributing significantly to the continent’s GDP. The AfCFTA is expected to dramatically increase intra-African trade, creating millions of jobs, especially within the burgeoning services sector.

Fintech, creative industries, and e-commerce are already witnessing explosive growth, fueled by innovative startups and increasing consumer demand. Companies like Flutterwave, Interswitch, and Jumia are leading this charge, demonstrating the potential for African businesses to thrive in the digital age.

Nigeria, with its large market, entrepreneurial drive, and expanding digital infrastructure, is strategically positioned to lead this digital transformation. The country’s commitment to ratifying and implementing the AfCFTA’s Protocol on Digital Trade and its focus on regulatory harmonization and infrastructure development underscores its ambition to become a continental digital hub.

    Dr. Jumoke Oduwole

Nigeria’s strengths in key sectors, including agriculture, pharmaceuticals, automotive, and particularly services like fintech and the creative industries, provide a strong foundation for its leadership aspirations. Government initiatives such as the National Talent Export Program (NATEP) further demonstrate Nigeria’s dedication to developing its digital talent pool.

Dr. Oduwole outlined a roadmap for realizing this vision, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing national regulatory frameworks, fostering multi-stakeholder collaboration, and investing in capacity building. She stressed the need for clear legal frameworks aligned with the AfCFTA protocols, strong partnerships between governments, the private sector, and development organizations, and continuous investment in digital skills development to empower African businesses and individuals.

Recognizing the challenges that remain, including regulatory fragmentation, infrastructure deficits, and cybersecurity concerns, Dr. Oduwole called for a coordinated effort to address these obstacles. She emphasized the need for harmonized regulations, improved digital infrastructure, and robust cybersecurity measures to build trust and facilitate seamless cross-border transactions.

Dr. Oduwole concluded with a call to action, urging governments to prioritize the ratification and implementation of the Protocol on Digital Trade and proposing the designation of a Continental Champion for Digital Trade to drive resource mobilization and investment promotion. She expressed confidence that the private sector, particularly Africa’s talented youth, would seize the opportunities presented by the AfCFTA, transforming the continent into a global leader in digitally enabled trade.

With its strategic vision, commitment to implementation, and focus on collaboration, Nigeria is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping Africa’s digital future, unlocking the continent’s vast potential for economic growth and prosperity
