Nigerian schools are being called upon to apply for the inaugural $1 million Global Schools Prize, a major new award celebrating the world’s most innovative and impactful educational institutions.
The invitation came from Peter Tabichi, the visionary Kenyan educator who won the 2019 Global Teacher Prize. Tabichi encouraged ‘extraordinary’ Nigerian schools to apply for the award, which is organized by the Varkey Foundation in collaboration with UNESCO.
“As a teacher, I have seen first-hand how schools in Nigeria rise to challenges with creativity and heart, finding remarkable ways to build brighter futures for their students. I encourage schools across Nigeria to apply—because your vision, courage, and commitment to education can inspire not just our nation, but the entire world,” Tabichi said.
The Global Schools Prize is designed to identify and celebrate schools worldwide that are successfully reimagining education for the future.

- The overall winner, recognized as the Global Schools Prize recipient, will receive $500,000 to scale their vision and impact.
- Ten category winners will each be awarded $50,000. Categories cover critical areas like AI transformation, sustainability, peacebuilding, teacher development, and more.
All longlisted schools will receive a Global Schools Prize Badge for world-class impact and will be welcomed into the Global Schools Network, providing access to partnerships and global collaboration opportunities.
The Global Schools Prize is open to both government-run and privately funded schools worldwide. Applications are now open and can be submitted online.
