The Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa CCIE, has urged key players in the fintech industry to collaborate to drive financial inclusion and literacy.

Speaking at the 6th annual FirstBank FinTech Summit, Inuwa emphasized NITDA’s commitment to a regulatory framework that fosters innovation while protecting consumers. The agency’s Regulatory Intelligence Framework aims to create market value, enable innovation, and safeguard consumer interests through collaboration with industry stakeholders.

Collaboration as a Catalyst for Financial Inclusion

Inuwa highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving financial inclusion. He cited the successful implementation of Nigeria’s cashless policy as a prime example of how collaboration between NITDA and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has spurred fintech innovation.

The DG also mentioned ongoing initiatives to develop guidelines for electronic invoicing, which will create new opportunities for fintech companies. He stressed the need for unified regulations and policy-making to ensure effective implementation and foster a conducive environment for fintech growth.

Bridging the Digital Divide and Empowering Nigerians

To address the digital divide and promote financial inclusion, NITDA is actively working to enhance digital literacy. The agency has launched a National Digital Literacy Framework to integrate digital skills into formal education and has partnered with the Ministry of Education and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to train millions of Nigerians.

    Data Sovereignty and Cloud Infrastructure

Inuwa also addressed the importance of data sovereignty and the need to build in-country cloud infrastructure. He emphasized the risks associated with relying on foreign cloud services and the importance of empowering local fintechs by creating a secure and reliable digital ecosystem.

    Conclusion

By fostering collaboration, promoting digital literacy, and addressing data sovereignty concerns, NITDA aims to create a thriving fintech ecosystem that empowers Nigerians and drives economic growth. Inuwa expressed optimism about Nigeria’s potential to become a global leader in fintech innovation.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Collaboration is crucial for driving financial inclusion and literacy.
    • NITDA’s regulatory framework aims to balance innovation and consumer protection.
    • Bridging the digital divide is essential for financial inclusion.
    • Data sovereignty and in-country cloud infrastructure are vital for national security and fintech growth.
