The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has issued a stern warning to telecom operators, including MTN, Glo, and Airtel, following the recent 50% increase in telecommunications tariffs. The FCCPC has emphasized that these tariff adjustments must directly translate into significant service improvements for consumers.

In a press release signed by its Director of Corporate Affairs, Ondaje Ijagwu, the commission highlighted that consumers have consistently demanded tangible improvements in service quality, such as reduced network congestion, fewer dropped calls, consistent internet speeds, and enhanced customer service, before any tariff increases are implemented. The FCCPC noted that these issues remain prevalent concerns for consumers.

Furthermore, the commission emphasized the importance of the recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). This MoU underscores a shared commitment to consumer protection, fair competition, and the eradication of exploitative practices within the telecommunications sector.

The FCCPC stressed that any regulatory or pricing adjustments must prioritize the interests of consumers while also ensuring the sustainability of the industry. “It is non-negotiable that telecom operators must prioritize visible and measurable improvements in network reliability, speed, accessibility, and customer service as part of any tariff adjustment,” the commission stated.

The commission concluded by emphasizing that the rationale for the tariff increase must be clearly reflected in tangible benefits for consumers who rely heavily on telecommunications services for both personal and business needs.
