The economic corridor between the United Kingdom and Nigeria has reached a historic turning point as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commences a State Visit to the United Kingdom later today. The visit catalyzes a massive wave of reciprocal investments, spearheaded by a £100 million commitment from fintech giant LemFi and a £24 million manufacturing expansion by British legacy brand Twinings Ovaltine.

The surge in activity, underpinned by the UK-Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership (ETIP), marks a shift from traditional aid-based relations to a high-value strategic alliance focused on financial services, technology and the creative economy.

Nigerian financial institutions are aggressively scaling their British footprints. Already, Zenith has announced the inauguration of its Manchester branch, a move expected to create 30 direct jobs and signal a potential 2027 London Stock Exchange listing.

The fintech sector is moving even faster. LemFi has designated London as its global headquarters with a £100 million five-year investment plan, while Moniepoint and Kuda Bank both confirmed plans to double their UK footprints by 2026. This expansion brings the total number of Nigerian banks operating in the UK to seven, collectively supporting over 1,000 jobs.

“The United Kingdom remains a key global financial centre. This expansion enables us to support trade and connect businesses between Africa and the UK more effectively,” said Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, Group MD/CEO of Zenith Bank PLC.

The investment flow is not one-way. Twinings Ovaltine has launched its first African manufacturing facility in Lagos, a £24 million investment creating 100 jobs and positioning Nigeria as an export hub for West Africa.

In the creative sector, Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife brand is set to launch ‘EbonyLife Place London,’ creating 40 jobs and providing a permanent home for African storytelling in the UK capital. This is bolstered by a new strategic partnership between the UK Advertising Exports Group and the Nigerian advertising sector.

The partnership is also embedding itself in the next generation. Leading UK institutions, including the University of Birmingham and the London School of Economics (LSE), have signed new agreements with Nigerian counterparts to deliver programmes in Applied AI and Data Science. Furthermore, Wellington College International Lagos is set to open in 2027, catering to 1,500 students with a British curriculum.

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy emphasized that growth is the core mission of the current government, noting that the thriving cultural and commercial bonds are delivering tangible benefits to citizens of both nations.

As President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu arrive for the State Visit, the message is clear: the UK-Nigeria relationship has evolved into a sophisticated, multi-sector engine for global innovation.
