E-commerce market to experience 4.6% decline by 2029

Data from Stocklytics.com has predicted a significant slowdown in the annual growth rate of e-commerce, dropping from current highs to just 4.6% by 2029.

This is even as the data indicates that the global e-commerce industry is on track for a record-breaking year, exceeding $4 trillion in revenue – a 15% jump from 2023. While the ease and popularity of online shopping continue to fuel double-digit growth, this trend is expected to shift within the next five years.

The past five years have seen a surge in e-commerce innovation. Technologies like AI, voice search, and immersive AR/VR experiences have blurred the lines between online shopping and traditional brick-and-mortar stores. These advancements, along with personalized customer service, have attracted new users and boosted revenue despite challenges such as supply chain issues, inflation, and shifting consumer behavior.

A Statista Market Insights survey highlights this growth. Between 2019 and 2024, global e-commerce revenue skyrocketed nearly 90%, reaching $4.11 trillion from $2.18 trillion. Fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic, the market saw an average annual growth rate of 25% before experiencing a dip in 2022 and 2023. However, Statista anticipates a resurgence in 2024 and 2025, with growth rates of 14.6% and 16.4% respectively.

Following this projected recovery, the market is expected to face a significant slowdown. While revenue will continue to rise, the pace will be considerably slower compared to previous years. Statista predicts a growth rate of 11.5% in 2026, marking a nearly 5% drop from the year before and pushing total revenue to $5.34 trillion. This downward trend is likely to continue, with growth rates dropping to 9.2% in 2027 and just 4.6% in 2029. This final figure represents a one-third decrease from the growth projected for 2024 and a significant decline from Statista’s January forecast of 7% growth in 2029.

The Statista survey suggests a similar slowdown across all major markets. Asia, the reigning champion with e-commerce giants like Alibaba, AliExpress, JD.com, and Rakuten, will see its annual growth rate fall from 15.6% to 4.5% within the next five years. Despite this slowdown, Asia is expected to remain the global leader, generating over half of the total market revenue at $3.15 trillion by 2029.

The US market, dominated by Amazon, is predicted to reach $2 trillion in revenue by 2029, up from $1.33 trillion this year. However, the annual growth rate will decline from 14.6% to 4.7%. Europe follows a similar pattern, with a projected growth rate of 4.5% in 2029 compared to 11.8% this year, and revenue nearing $1 trillion within the next five years.

While the pace of e-commerce growth may be moderating, the industry is still poised for significant expansion. The global market is expected to welcome over one billion new users in the next five years, bringing the total number to 3.6 billion by 2029. This suggests a maturing market with a focus on user retention and engagement strategies alongside continued growth.
