In a move aimed at boosting the construction sector and empowering skilled workers, the Nigerian government has announced plans to launch a digital platform, dubbed “Uber for Artisans,” to connect trained artisans with diverse job opportunities.

The initiative, unveiled by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Architect Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, will create an online marketplace where skilled Nigerians can be easily accessed by potential clients. During a meeting with the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Industrial Training and Development, Hon. Adamson Ayinde, Minister Dangiwa emphasized the platform’s potential to enhance efficiency and visibility for artisans.

“This online application will leverage technology to make artisans more visible, accessible, and efficient in delivering their services,” stated Minister Dangiwa. “It will create valuable earning opportunities for our skilled workers while providing customers with easy access to qualified professionals for their construction needs.”

The “Uber for Artisans” platform is part of a broader strategy to address the skills gap in the construction industry. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development also announced the establishment of the National Artisan Skill Acquisition Program (NASA). This program will partner with various government agencies, institutions, and the private sector to provide comprehensive training to young Nigerians.

NASA will focus on critical construction-related skills, including plumbing, electrical work, masonry, and carpentry. The initiative is slated for launch within the year, marking a significant step towards equipping young Nigerians with marketable skills.

In addition to the digital platform and training program, the ministry is working to complete and operationalize vocational training centers in Abuja, Lagos, and Imo states. The 2025 budget proposal includes allocations for these centers, demonstrating the government’s commitment to investing in skills development.

Minister Dangiwa further revealed that some of these institutions will undergo refurbishment in the coming months to serve as dedicated centers for hands-on training and capacity building. This comprehensive approach underscores the government’s dedication to bridging the skills gap and fostering a robust construction sector.

By leveraging digital technology and investing in vocational training, the Nigerian government aims to empower its workforce, create employment opportunities, and drive sustainable growth in the construction industry.
